Teeth are not
like skin and other human tissues, which grow continuously and self
rejuvenate. Teeth and dental structures generally cannot repair
themselves. Their health and vitality deteriorate whenever regular
or needed care is lacking. Dental health problems, if not treated
timely, can damage other parts of the body.
Dental caries, commonly called tooth
decay, is a very prevalent disease. When a sticky film (plaque) of
bacteria hardens on a tooth, calculus or tartar builds up on the
tooth and leads to tooth decay. After eating sugar and food residues
around a tooth, bacteria living inside the mouth produce acids,
which eat away the tooth enamel and produce tooth cavity.
If not caught in time, tooth decay reaches and affects the
inner portion (pulp) of the tooth. Often it uproots the tooth from
the base.
Thus, unless properly cared for,
teeth lead to many diseases that can prove to be
disastrous. |
