Dental Bridges to Walk on Your Way
A dental bridge is used to fill an area left by a missing tooth or teeth. Unlike a denture, a dental bridge is fixed and cannot be taken out. A dental bridge is a false tooth (known as a pontic) fused between two porcelain crowns attached onto the neighboring teeth on each side. A cantilever-type dental bridge is used when there are no neighboring teeth on one side. Dental bridges can reduce your risk of gum disease, help correct some bite issues, and even improve your speech.
A dental bridge procedure needs at least two sessions of a few hours, and is done as follows:
give a mild anesthetic to numb the area;
remove areas besides teeth on either side of the space to accommodate for the thickness of the crown;
make a model impression for the bridge (false tooth) to be made;
make model impressions for the crowns to be made:
place a temporary bridge (known as a flipper) for you to wear until your next visit;
get bridge and crowns made from a dental laboratory;
remove the temporary bridge during your second visit;
fit the crowns and the permanent bridge;
check and adjust for any bite discrepancies;
cement the bridge to your teeth.
